Arsenal Seek Mbappe Alternative, Arteta Plans Gabriel Jesus Backup

Gabriel Jesus is injured with a hamstring problem and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been encouraged to sign Ollie Watkins. The 27-year-old England striker recently extended his contract with Aston Villa until 2028 after an impressive start to the season.

Watkins has made nine Premier League appearances for Villa this season, scoring five goals and dishing out five assists. His impressive performances have attracted interest from some of Europe's top clubs and Arsenal have been told to strike while the iron is hot.

In an interview with DAZN Bet, Michael Owen said Watkins could soon become "one of the best strikers in the Premier League". "I think Ollie Watkins can be one of the best strikers in the Premier League," the former Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United striker said.

"He has a lot of momentum at the moment and he can play for any team. However, I think Aston Villa would be a good fit for him because I think they are on the up. A year ago, I said there were two players in the Premier League who had more ability than they showed - Ollie Watkins and Darwin Nunez."

"I thought both of them were rough diamonds and with some training and help they could be top players. It's great to see Watkins fulfill his potential now."

While Owen spoke highly of Watkins and suggested he could join clubs such as Manchester City and Arsenal, he admitted the Villa striker is not good enough to join Real Madrid. "I don't think Watkins deserves Real Madrid at the moment," the 43-year-old said.

"If he continues to improve you never know what level he can reach, but if you are Real Madrid you might want to sign the best striker in the world to match your position, but you definitely need one of the three best strikers in the world."

"If that was the case, you'd be looking at players like Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane. I don't think Watkins is at their level yet."

At the end of Owen's interview, he also predicted that Watkins will one day replace Kane as England's leading man. The former England international said, "Watkins is starting to show his true worth now. He's got a massive opportunity."

"Harry Kane is still the best striker in the England team but he's not getting any younger, he's not going to be around for another five or six years, so the position behind Kane is an opportunity. Players like Ivan Toney and Callum Wilson have a chance to be England's number one striker in the next year or two if they play well."
